7 Common Braces Mistakes to Avoid for New Users

Making Smiles Inside & Out

More than 4 million people in the United States have braces to correct dental problems that they may be having. With that being said, there are quite a few common braces mistakes that can be made by people that have them.

In this article, we’re going to provide you with these mistakes and avoid making them. Continue reading this article to find out what you shouldn’t do when you’ve got braces.

1. Getting Braces From a Dentist

While it may sound like a great idea to have your braces put on by your dentist, it’s not. It sounds crazy that the person in charge of taking care of your teeth can’t also be the person to put your braces on for you. However, it’s recommended that you go to an orthodontist to have your braces put on. The reason being is that an orthodontist has the extensive experience that is required to have braces put on correctly. The knowledge that an orthodontist has exceeds that of regular dentistry and if you’d like to save money and time having to get braces redone go to an orthodontist.

2. Missing Appointments

When you’ve got braces, you must always attend your appointments. The reason being is that when you miss appointments, it may mean that your teeth aren’t getting the proper cleaning that they need. And when you’ve got braces having cavities and other dental problems can become challenging to treat. It may lead to tooth and gum disease, as well. To avoid all of these things, attend all of your dental appointments to ensure that your teeth are kept healthy throughout the time you’ve got your braces.

3. Not Choosing the Best Treatment

When you’ve got braces, you’ll be advised of treatments that will prove beneficial to you while you’ve got braces. However, one thing to avoid is not having treatments done because of the expense of the treatment. Sit down and have a conversation with your orthodontist about the pros and cons of having each procedure. As well as asking them whether the procedures are essential. If you opt not to have a procedure or treatment because of the cost, you could risk having to wear your braces for longer than intended. Once you’ve been given the list of treatments, contact your insurance company and ask which expenses they’ll cover. Your insurance company will be able to tell you in detail the portion of the covered costs. Leaving you with a better idea of the portion that you’ve got to take care of on your end.

4. Eating Foods You Can’t Have

When you get your braces, your orthodontist will give you a list of foods that you’re not allowed to eat. One mistake that people with braces commonly make is continuing to consume these foods. The foods that are on the don’t eat list are on that list for a reason. Mainly because they can cause issues with your braces, including messing with the wires or breaking brackets. If you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself in the orthodontist office having to explain what happened to your braces and paying for extra appointments that aren’t needed. And trust us broken wires can prove to be painful, especially when there poking your cheeks. Some foods that you may want to avoid are hard foods. Hard foods can cause your braces to break and become unhinged in a painful way. You’ll also need to avoid sticky foods. Sticky foods can be challenging to get out of your braces, leaving you uncomfortable when it comes time to cleaning everything out of your teeth. You should also strive to avoid sodas and juices when you’ve got braces. The reason being is all of these things can cause your teeth to be stained.

5. Getting Braces Because They’re Cool

It seems to be a trend amongst kids to want braces because their friends have braces. Before getting braces, ensure that you’re getting them for the right reasons. You need to ensure that you’re getting braces because you need them and not because you want them. Visiting your orthodontist will help you to determine whether or not you actually need the braces.

6. Poor Oral Hygiene

When you get braces, one of the most important things that you need to do is maintain your oral hygiene. As mentioned earlier, not taking care of your teeth can leave you with tooth and gum disease issues. Having to deal with tooth and gum disease and cavities can affect the length of time you’ve got braces. It can also affect the brace’s ability to do there job.

7. Not Understanding Service Fees

Before you get your braces and pay any fees associated with your orthodontist package, ask what’s included. Questioning what’s included in your package will give you a better idea of all the services that you’re going to be getting. It also will give you time to address other potential fees that may arise in the future. When you know what you’re paying for upfront, it’ll keep you from being surprised by hidden costs. The more you know about your service package, the better off you’ll be.

Common Braces Mistakes Avoided

When discussing common braces mistakes, you must take into account everything that we’ve listed above. Not avoiding these things can cause you to spend more money, time, and resources fixing the mistakes that you’ve made. If you’re unsure about avoiding these mistakes, it’s worth talking to your orthodontist about the things to avoid. Remember, when you avoid these mistakes, you’ll be able to get your braces off sooner than you could’ve imagined.
