Frequently Asked Questions
Do you charge for an initial visit?
No. As a courtesy to you and your family dentist, your initial consultation is always free. We will discuss whether braces or tooth straightening makes sense for you with no fee and no obligation.
At what age do you start seeing patients?
We like to evaluate children after the 6-year molars erupt and the front permanent teeth begin to appear, usually between ages 6 and 8. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have a first orthodontic check by age 7.
Why do you evaluate patients so young?
The purpose of an early visit is to inform and observe more than to begin treatment. Evaluating young helps us identify and discuss any eventual needs, review habits, and note medical considerations. Only a small percentage of young patients need early intervention. For everyone else, we set up a simple monitoring schedule until the time is right.
How long will the first visit take?
Plan for about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on where you are in the process. We may do a visual exam and explain what we see, or take X-rays and complete diagnostics, including photographs and digital records, to document your current bite.
Do you take patients transferring from out of town?
Yes. We treat a transferring patient much like a new patient: we gather complete diagnostic records to see your current status, then propose a plan to finish the work already started.
Do you have any adult patients?
Absolutely. A growing share of our patients are adults, and today’s more discreet, comfortable appliances make adult treatment easier than ever. Learn more on our clear aligners for adults and adult orthodontic treatment pages.
What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?
An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed at least two additional years of full-time, accredited training in orthodontics, earning a recognized specialty certificate. An orthodontist then limits their practice to straightening teeth and guiding facial and jaw development (dentofacial orthopedics).
Can I schedule all my appointments after school or late in the day?
We do our best to accommodate your family’s schedule. Because after-school and late-day slots are in high demand, some longer procedures need to be scheduled between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., but we will always work with you to find times that fit.
Do you see patients for emergencies?
Yes. Most issues are minor and can be eased at home until we see you. Visit our emergency care page for guidance, and call our office to be seen.
Can we make payments?
Yes. With or without insurance, we will set up a convenient, interest-free payment plan that usually spans the length of your treatment, so your monthly payment fits your budget.
How do you handle insurance?
We file your claims for you and, after verifying your coverage, bill and collect from your carrier. We are in-network with Cigna and Delta Dental and work with all private insurance companies. Please note that if your coverage changes or ends during treatment, the agreed-upon fee remains your responsibility.
Do you take American Express, MasterCard, and Visa?
Yes, we accept all major credit cards, along with checks, Discover, and HSA and FSA funds.
Do you have direct debit?
Yes. We offer direct debit, automatic card payments, and online payments, with auto-pay on a day you choose.
Do you charge interest?
No, we do not. Our in-house payment plans are interest-free.
Do you give family discounts?
Yes. We offer special programs and fees for multiple family members in comprehensive treatment, and discounts are available to clergy.
Do retainers need to be worn after braces?
Yes. You wear retainers full-time for the first several months after braces, then switch to nighttime wear indefinitely, since teeth naturally shift throughout life. Learn more on our retainers page.
